Range of meaning

Personal and tribal name, from Hebrew Naphtali, 'my wrestling' (Gen 30:8: 'with mighty wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister').

Against the English

The KJV spells it 'Nepthalim', after the Greek form. Modern versions use 'Naphtali'.

Used elsewhere in the period

Naphtali was the first area deported by Tiglath-pileser III of Assyria, around 733 BC (2 Kgs 15:29). Isa 9:1–2 promises light to 'the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, Galilee of the nations', and Matt 4:13–16 applies that promise to Jesus' move to Capernaum.
