Range of meaning

"By common agreement," "admittedly," "undeniably," "as everyone acknowledges." It comes from homologeō, "to say the same thing, agree, confess."

Against the English

KJV/WEB "without controversy" and NIV "beyond all question" capture the sense of "undeniably." BSB and NASB "by common confession" and ESV "we confess" keep the link to the church's confession (homologia, as in 1 Timothy 6:12–13), which is likely intended here because a formula is quoted next.

Used elsewhere in the period

Used in Hellenistic prose of a point no one can dispute. Strikingly, 4 Maccabees uses it in its thesis statement: "Confessedly, then, devout reason [ho eusebēs logismos] is master of the passions" (4 Maccabees 6:31; also 7:16; 16:1). That passage pairs this adverb with the eusebeia word-group, just as this verse does.

  1. 1 Timothy 3:16 ὁμολογουμένως confessedly

By common confession, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was proclaimed among the nations, was believed in throughout the world, was taken up in glory.

Here: "As is agreed by all" or "as we confess." It is built on the verb for confessing (homologeō), so it signals that what follows is a shared confession and not Paul's private opinion.
