In depth

From the study of 1 Corinthians 11:26

Range of meaning

"As many times as, as often as, whenever." With ἐάν/ἄν and the subjunctive it describes an indefinite, repeated occurrence.

Against the English

"As often as" (KJV, BSB, ESV, WEB) keeps the sense of repetition. "Whenever" (NIV) and "every time" (NLT) are also fair. None of them adds a frequency, and neither does the Greek.

Used elsewhere in the period

Rare in the NT: only here, v.25 and Revelation 11:6 ("as often as they wish"). In ordinary Greek it means "as many times as."

Where it appears

1 Corinthians · 2
  1. 1 Corinthians 11:25 ὁσάκις as often as

In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Here: Assumes repeated occasions but does not say how often.

  2. 1 Corinthians 11:26 ὁσάκις As often as

For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

Here: Picks up the same word from Jesus' cup saying in v.25 ("do this, as often as you drink it"). It assumes the meal is repeated regularly but does not say how often.

Revelation · 1
  1. Revelation 11:6 ὁσάκις as often as

These witnesses have power to shut the sky so that no rain will fall during the days of their prophecy, and power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they wish.

Here: No limit on how many times: they can use this power again and again.
