Revelation 4:7 πετομένῳ. flying.
The first living creature was like a lion, the second like a calf, the third had a face like a man, and the fourth was like an eagle in flight.
Here: 'Flying', in the present tense: the eagle is seen in the act of flight. This is the only creature shown in motion, and the detail looks ahead to the six wings of verse 8.
-
Revelation 8:13 πετομένου flying
And as I observed, I heard an eagle flying overhead, calling in a loud voice, “Woe! Woe! Woe to those who dwell on the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the remaining three angels!”
Here: A present participle: it calls out while it flies, like a herald going across the whole sky.
-
Revelation 12:14 πέτηται she may fly
But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle to fly from the presence of the serpent to her place in the wilderness, where she was nourished for a time, and times, and half a time.
Here: Present subjunctive: 'that she might fly'. The same verb is used of the eagle 'flying in midheaven' in 8:13 and of the angel in 14:6.
-
Revelation 14:6 πετόμενον flying
Then I saw another angel flying overhead, with the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on the earth—to every nation and tribe and tongue and people.
Here: 'Flying.' The present tense shows the angel in mid-flight, covering the whole sky. It deliberately echoes the eagle 'flying in mid-heaven' in 8:13, which cried 'woe' to the earth's inhabitants.
-
Revelation 19:17 πετομένοις are flying
Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out in a loud voice to all the birds flying overhead, “Come, gather together for the great supper of God,
Here: A present participle, meaning they are flying right now, circling. It pictures birds wheeling high overhead, the way carrion birds do.
