- Range of meaning
To fix firmly or fasten (in the New Testament, to 'pitch' a tent, Heb 8:2). Of liquids, to set, congeal or freeze solid.
- Against the English
Brenton and KJV say 'being congealed', WEB says 'when it freezes'. Both are fine.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Exod 15:8 in the Greek Old Testament: the waves 'congealed' (ἐπάγη, epagē) in the heart of the sea. In Sirach 43:20 the same verb is used for ice forming on water. In Greek, πάχνη (frost) and πάγος (frost, ice) are related in sound and sense to this verb.
