Range of meaning

"To spend in addition, spend beyond." It is a compound of pros ("besides") and dapanaō ("spend, pay costs"). The word belongs to accounts and expenses.

Against the English

"Any additional expense" (BSB), "whatsoever thou spendest more" (KJV), and "whatever you spend beyond that" (WEB) all capture it. NLT's "if his bill runs higher than this" is a good idiomatic rendering.

Used elsewhere in the period

It is rare, occurring only here in the New Testament. The simple verb dapanaō is used in Mark 5:26 (the woman who "spent all she had" on doctors) and Luke 15:14 (the younger son who "spent everything").

The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Take care of him,’ he said, ‘and on my return I will repay you for any additional expense.’

Here: "Spend over and above" the two denarii. It is a bookkeeping word for extra outlay and occurs only here in the New Testament.
