In depth

From the study of Luke 14:28

Range of meaning

Completion, finishing, bringing a work to its finished state. It comes from ἀπαρτίζω, to complete or finish off.

Against the English

'To finish/complete it' (all versions). The KJV's 'sufficient' and 'it' are words the translators supplied.

Used elsewhere in the period

This is the only use in the New Testament and the word is rare in literature. It is attested in documentary papyri for finishing work and building projects (see Moulton–Milligan and BDAG), so it may have had a slightly technical, builder's-contract feel.

Where it appears

Luke · 1
  1. Luke 14:28 ἀπαρτισμόν; [its] completion?

Which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost to see if he has the resources to complete it?

Here: The finished, completed state of the work. The final word of the question rests on the end of the project, and verse 29 shows the shame of failing to reach it.
