Range of meaning

A name meaning 'building' or 'built,' from the root b-n-h. It is used for a returning clan (Neh 7:15) and for Levites (Ezra 8:33; Neh 10:9; 12:8).

Against the English

All English versions keep the name. They differ on whether Binnui is a person or a family heading.

Used elsewhere in the period

Nehemiah 7:15 'sons of Binnui, 648' corresponds to Ezra 2:10 'sons of Bani, 642.' The two names look like variant forms of one clan name, which may explain why Bani and Binnui sit side by side here.
