Range of meaning

A people name: "Hagrites." It also appears as hagrim (Ps 83:6) and in 1 Chr 5:10; 27:31 (Jaziz "the Hagrite" over David's flocks).

Against the English

KJV/YLT "Hagarites" suggests descent from Hagar. Modern versions use "Hagrites," which is closer to the Hebrew and does not decide where the name comes from.

Used elsewhere in the period

Ps 83:6 lists the Hagrites separately from the Ishmaelites. Assyrian royal inscriptions (Tiglath-pileser III, Sennacherib) name a people called Hagaranu. Some have also linked the name to Hegra (al-Hijr) in north-western Arabia and to the "Agraioi" of Greek geographers.
