Where it appears

Joshua · 4
  1. Joshua 15:8 הִנֹּ֗ם הִנֹּם֙ Hinnom, [Ben] Hinnom

From there the border went up the Valley of Ben-hinnom along the southern slope of the Jebusites (that is, Jerusalem) and ascended to the top of the hill that faces the Valley of Hinnom on the west, at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim.

Here: A personal or clan name whose meaning is unknown. This is its first appearance in the Bible. Here it is purely a landmark. Its later dark associations come from events centuries afterwards.

  2. Joshua 18:16 הִנֹּ֔ם הִנֹּ֜ם Hinnom, [Ben] Hinnom

Then it went down to the foot of the hill that faces the Valley of Ben-hinnom at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim and ran down the Valley of Hinnom toward the southern slope of the Jebusites and downward to En-rogel.

Here: A personal or clan name attached to the valley. In Joshua it is simply a landmark.

2 Kings · 1
  1. 2 Kings 23:10 הִנֹּ֑ם Hinnom

He also desecrated Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom so that no one could sacrifice his son or daughter in the fire to Molech.

Here: A personal or clan name of unknown meaning. 'Valley of Hinnom' (gê hinnōm) is the phrase that later became 'Gehenna'.

2 Chronicles · 2
  1. 2 Chronicles 28:3 הִנֹּ֑ם Hinnom

Moreover, Ahaz burned incense in the Valley of Ben-hinnom and sacrificed his sons in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.

Here: A personal or clan name whose meaning is unknown. The valley's name, Ge-Hinnom, later became 'Gehenna'.

  2. 2 Chronicles 33:6 הִנֹּ֔ם Hinnom

He sacrificed his sons in the fire in the Valley of Ben-hinnom. He practiced sorcery, divination, and witchcraft, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did great evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him to anger.

Here: A personal or clan name otherwise unknown. Gei-hinnom ('valley of Hinnom') later gives the Greek name Geenna, 'Gehenna.'

Nehemiah · 1
  1. Nehemiah 11:30 הִנֹּֽם׃ Hinnom

Zanoah, Adullam, and their villages; in Lachish and its fields; and in Azekah and its villages. So they settled from Beersheba all the way to the Valley of Hinnom.

Jeremiah · 5
  1. Jeremiah 7:31 הִנֹּ֔ם Hinnom

They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom so they could burn their sons and daughters in the fire—something I never commanded, nor did it even enter My mind.

Here: A personal or clan name whose meaning is unknown. Joshua 15:8 already uses it as a boundary marker. Through the Aramaic gê-hinnām it later gives the Greek word 'Gehenna'.

  2. Jeremiah 7:32 הִנֹּ֔ם Hinnom

So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Topheth and the Valley of Ben-hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter. For they will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room.

  3. Jeremiah 19:2 הִנֹּ֔ם Hinnom

and go out to the Valley of Ben-hinnom near the entrance of the Potsherd Gate. Proclaim there the words I speak to you,

Here: Hinnom. The full name 'Valley of the son of Hinnom' marks the ravine west and south of Jerusalem where Topheth stood (vv.5–6). Much later the shortened form gê-hinnōm became 'Gehenna'.

  4. Jeremiah 19:6 הִנֹּ֑ם Hinnom

So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben-hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.

Here: A personal or family name of unknown meaning. The valley carried it as early as the tribal boundary lists (Joshua 15:8; 18:16).

  5. Jeremiah 32:35 הִנֹּ֗ם Hinnom

They have built the high places of Baal in the Valley of Ben-hinnom to make their sons and daughters pass through the fire to Molech—something I never commanded them, nor had it ever entered My mind, that they should commit such an abomination and cause Judah to sin.

Here: A personal or clan name. In later Aramaic and Greek, 'Valley of Hinnom' (gē hinnom) became Gehenna, the word for the place of fiery judgment.
