In depth
From the study of 2 Chronicles 24:26
- Range of meaning
Both come from zabad, 'to endow, bestow a gift'. The same root appears in Leah's words in Gen 30:20, 'God has endowed me with a good endowment'. Jehozabad means 'YHWH has endowed'. Zabad is either a short form of a name built on God's name or a separate name of the same type.
- Against the English
English readers see only names. Hebrew hearers would have heard a confession of faith in Israel's God inside them.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Both names are common in Chronicles (1 Chr 2:36–37; 7:21; 11:41; 2 Chr 17:18; Ezra 10:27, 33, 43). Seals and other inscriptions from the Iron Age show that names built on YHWH's name were standard in Judah.
