- Range of meaning
A distant land reached by sea from the Red Sea and proverbial for the finest gold. Genesis 10:29 lists Ophir among the sons of Joktan, alongside Sheba and Havilah, which points toward southern Arabia. The main proposals for its location are south-western Arabia, the Horn of Africa (Somalia/Eritrea, the possible region of the Egyptians' 'Punt'), and western India. Solomon's voyages there apparently took a long time (compare 1 Kings 10:22, 'once every three years', though that verse may describe a combined trade).
- Against the English
All English versions transliterate it as 'Ophir'. The word itself is accurate. What modern readers miss is that 'Ophir gold' was a byword for top-quality gold, something like a premium brand name.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Job 22:24; 28:16; Psalm 45:9 ('the queen in gold of Ophir'); Isaiah 13:12; 1 Chronicles 29:4. An 8th-century BC ostracon (inscribed potsherd) from Tell Qasile near Tel Aviv reads 'gold of Ophir to Beth-horon, 30 shekels'. This confirms that 'Ophir gold' was a real trade designation in Israel's world.
