חוֹל
chol
sand
Ḥôl is sand, the sand of shore or desert. 'Like the sand of the sea' is a fixed image for numbers beyond counting: of descendants (Gen 22:17; 32:12), of armies (Josh 11:4; Judg 7:12), of grain (Gen 41:49), and even of wisdom (1 Kgs 4:29).

In depth
- Range of meaning
Ḥôl is sand, the sand of shore or desert. 'Like the sand of the sea' is a fixed image for numbers beyond counting: of descendants (Gen 22:17; 32:12), of armies (Josh 11:4; Judg 7:12), of grain (Gen 41:49), and even of wisdom (1 Kgs 4:29). The two verbs mean to measure (mādad, by line or by volume) and to count (sāpar).
- Against the English
English 'cannot be measured or counted' is accurate. What English readers miss is that this is not a fresh metaphor. It quotes, almost word for word, God's promise to Jacob in Genesis 32:12 (Hebrew 32:13): 'like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.'
- Used elsewhere in the period
Genesis 22:17 (to Abraham); Genesis 32:12 (to Jacob, the closest wording); 1 Kings 4:20 ('Judah and Israel were as many as the sand by the sea', under the united kingdom); Jeremiah 33:22 (both verbs, 'not counted… not measured', in a promise about David's line and the Levites). Deuteronomy 28:62 threatens the reverse: a people left 'few in number' instead of countless.
From the study of 1 Samuel 13:5
- Range of meaning
A fixed phrase, 'like the sand which is on the lip of the sea for multitude', meaning a number past counting. It is not a measurement.
- Against the English
Modern versions compress it ('as numerous as the sand on the seashore'). KJV, WEB and YLT keep the full Hebrew rhythm, including 'in multitude' or 'for multitude'.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Used of the promised descendants of Abraham and Jacob (Gen 22:17; 32:12 [32:13 Heb.]), of Israel under Solomon (1 Kgs 4:20), and of enemy hordes: Joshua 11:4, about the Canaanite coalition 'like the sand on the seashore in multitude, with very many horses and chariots', and Judges 7:12, about the Midianites.
From the study of Isaiah 10:22
- Range of meaning
'Like the sand of the sea' is a fixed picture of a number past counting. It is used for the patriarchal promise (Genesis 22:17; 32:12), for armies (Joshua 11:4; Judges 7:12), and for Israel at its height (1 Kings 4:20).
- Against the English
English versions render it straightforwardly. What a modern reader may miss is the allusion: an Israelite heard God's oath to Abraham behind it.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Genesis 22:17 ('I will multiply your offspring… like the sand on the seashore'); Genesis 32:12; 1 Kings 4:20 (Judah and Israel 'as many as the sand by the sea' under Solomon). Hosea 1:10 (2:1 in Hebrew) uses the same promise as a hope after judgment. Paul joins Hosea and Isaiah in Romans 9:25–28.

Genesis 22:17 וְכַח֕וֹל and like the sand
I will surely bless you, and I will multiply your descendants like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will possess the gates of their enemies.
Here: A second image of the uncountable, this time from the ground. Earlier God compared Abraham's descendants to 'the dust of the earth' (13:16). Together, stars and sand cover the world from top to bottom.

Now the Midianites, Amalekites, and all the other people of the east had settled in the valley like a swarm of locusts, and their camels were as countless as the sand on the seashore.

Here: Ordinary beach sand, the weakest and loosest material there is, chosen as the wall against the sea. It also sounds like taḥílu ("writhe"): the people who should be writhing are set beside the sand that obeys.
