In depth
From the study of 1 Chronicles 7:24
- Range of meaning
A town name found only here, meaning roughly 'Uzzen of Sheerah'. The first part is uncertain (possibly from 'ōzen 'ear', used of a spur of land). The second part is the founder's name.
- Against the English
Translations transliterate it. Hyphenated forms ('Uzzen-sheerah') keep the clue that the town bears her name, while separated forms ('Uzzen Sheerah', WEB) make that a little harder to see.
- Used elsewhere in the period
There is no other biblical mention. Some geographers suggest Beit Sira, a village near the Beth-horons, whose name may preserve 'Sheerah', but this is not certain.

1 Chronicles 7:24 אֻזֵּ֥ן שֶׁאֱרָֽה׃ Uzzen, Sheerah
His daughter was Sheerah, who built Lower and Upper Beth-horon, as well as Uzzen-sheerah.
Here: The first half of a town name found only here. Its meaning is uncertain. It is sometimes linked to 'ōzen, 'ear', perhaps in the sense of a projecting spur of land, but this is a guess.
