Range of meaning

A name built from ḥānan, 'to be gracious, show favour', plus ʾēl, 'God': 'God is/has been gracious' or 'favour of God'.

Against the English

KJV spells it 'Haniel'. BSB, WEB and YLT have 'Hanniel', which keeps the doubled n of the Hebrew. It is the same name either way.

Used elsewhere in the period

In Numbers 34:23 a leader from Manasseh with this name helps divide the land. Names that praise a god's favour were common across the ancient Near East (compare the Phoenician name Hanni-baal).
