Range of meaning

Desire, longing, the thing someone is set on. The related verb ḥashaq means to be attached to, to love or cling to (of God's choice of Israel, Deuteronomy 7:7; of a man's desire for a woman, Deuteronomy 21:11).

Against the English

KJV 'pleasure' leans toward enjoyment. BSB 'desired' and NIV/ESV/NASB 'longed for' are accurate. Nothing in the word itself is sexual or sinful here. It is simply the evening he looked forward to.

Used elsewhere in the period

1 Kings 9:1, 19 (Solomon's 'desire' to build). The noun appears only rarely, but the verb is well attested.
