In depth
From the study of Deuteronomy 26:2
- Range of meaning
A basket, probably woven, used for carrying produce. It appears only in Deut 26:2, 4 and 28:5, 17, where 'your basket and your kneading-trough' are blessed or cursed.
- Against the English
'Basket' is accurate. English does lose the link with chapter 28, where the same basket is the object of covenant blessing or curse.
- Used elsewhere in the period
The Septuagint renders it kartallos, a pointed-bottomed basket, and the Vulgate borrows the word as cartallus. The Mishnah (Bikkurim 3) describes the rich bringing baskets of gold and silver and the poor bringing wicker baskets, which were given to the priests.
