In depth
From the study of 2 Kings 12:1
- Range of meaning
A personal name that contains the divine name (Yeho-, from Yahweh). It alternates in the same chapters with the short form Yoash (Joash). The meaning of the second part is debated. One common view, often traced to a root meaning 'to give', is 'Yahweh has given'. Others suggest 'Yahweh is strong' or leave the meaning open.
- Against the English
KJV, WEB, ESV and NASB keep the Hebrew's 'Jehoash' here. BSB, NIV and NLT standardize to 'Joash' throughout. That makes reading easier but hides the fact that the Hebrew uses both forms.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Both forms are attested as Hebrew names. A northern king of the same period is also called Jehoash/Joash (2 Kings 13:10), which is why translators often standardize the spelling to tell the two apart.
