- Range of meaning
A personal name built from a verb form of h-l-l ('to praise'; in another stem 'to shine') plus El ('God'). Possible meanings: 'he praises God', 'God is praised', or 'God shines forth'.
- Against the English
KJV and YLT spell it 'Jehaleleel'; BSB, WEB and most modern versions spell it 'Jehallelel'. The difference is only spelling.
- Used elsewhere in the period
The same name belongs to a Levite, the father of Azariah, in Hezekiah's temple reform (2 Chronicles 29:12). Names that end in -el and describe what God does or receives are common in Israelite and wider West Semitic naming.
