יִשְׁמָעֵאל
yishma'el
Ishmael
Shama' covers hearing, listening, paying attention, understanding, and obeying. 'Hear the voice of' often means 'obey' (Gen 3:17; 22:18). When God is the subject, he 'hears' someone's need, and that usually leads straight to action (Exod 2:24; 3:7; Deut 26:7).

From the study of Genesis 16:11
- Range of meaning
Shama' covers hearing, listening, paying attention, understanding, and obeying. 'Hear the voice of' often means 'obey' (Gen 3:17; 22:18). When God is the subject, he 'hears' someone's need, and that usually leads straight to action (Exod 2:24; 3:7; Deut 26:7). Yishma'el is a name built from a sentence: 'El hears' or 'May El hear.' The verb form can be read as a statement or as a wish.
- Against the English
English 'heard' can mean nothing more than noticing a sound. NASB's 'given heed' and ESV's 'listened to' carry more of the sense of attending and responding. The English name 'Ishmael' hides the meaning entirely. A Hebrew hearer caught the word 'hear' in the name at once.
- How it drifted
When a meaningful name is turned into an English proper noun, the meaning is lost. The narrator's pun only works if you can hear 'Yishma-' and 'shama'' side by side.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Names of the same pattern, 'the god hears' or 'may the god hear', are well attested among West Semitic (Amorite) personal names of the early second millennium BC, for example in the Mari texts. Akkadian has the parallel Išme-ilum. In the Bible, Simeon (Shim'on, Gen 29:33: 'because YHWH heard') and Samuel (popularly explained at 1 Sam 1:20) belong to the same family of 'God heard' names. In Gen 21:17 God again 'hears' the voice of the boy in the wilderness, a deliberate echo of this verse.
From the study of Jeremiah 40:8
- Range of meaning
Yishmaʿel means 'God hears'. It is a common personal name, best known from Abraham's son, and does not suggest anything foreign here. This man was 'of the royal seed' and 'one of the king's chief officers' (41:1).
- Against the English
English renders the name accurately. What the reader may not know is who the man is. The narrator offers no comment here, but this Ishmael goes on to murder Gedaliah (41:2).
- Used elsewhere in the period
The parallel account is 2 Kings 25:23–25. The plot was backed by Baalis king of the Ammonites (Jer 40:14). An Ammonite seal impression from Tell el-ʿUmeiri names 'Milkomʾur, servant of Baʿalyashaʿ', and some scholars identify that king with Baalis. Later Jewish tradition kept a fast in the seventh month for Gedaliah's murder (Zech 7:5; 8:19; rabbinic 'Fast of Gedaliah').
