- Range of meaning
A proper name for a settlement in the Shephelah, the low hill country between Judah's highlands and the coastal plain. It has no secure meaning as an ordinary word. Some connect it with a root having to do with binding or wrapping around, but that is a guess.
- Against the English
English versions differ only in spelling: 'Cabbon' (KJV, BSB, WEB, ESV) or 'Kabbon' (some modern versions that write Hebrew k as K).
- Used elsewhere in the period
Named only in Joshua 15:40. Some scholars have suggested it is the same place as Machbenah (Makbena) in Judah's family lists (1 Chronicles 2:49), because the consonants are similar. That identification is possible but not proven.
