In depth

From the study of Genesis 2:2

Range of meaning

'Work, occupation, task; skilled craftsmanship; the thing produced, workmanship; business, property'. It is related to the root behind mal'akh, 'messenger', so its basic idea seems to be a commissioned or assigned task: work carried out as a project, not simply effort or toil.

Against the English

All English versions have 'work', which is accurate. English 'work' can mean anything from a job to drudgery. Melakhah leans toward purposeful, skilled making. Hebrew has other words for hard labour or service (e.g. avodah).

Used elsewhere in the period

It is the key word of the tabernacle chapters (Exod 31:3, 5; 35:29–35; 36:1–7; 39:43; 40:33). It is also the word in the Sabbath command: 'you shall not do any melakhah' (Exod 20:10; 31:14–15; 35:2). The Mishnah (Shabbat 7:2) lists 39 categories of forbidden Sabbath melakhah, which rabbinic tradition drew from the crafts used to build the tabernacle.

From the study of Jeremiah 48:10

Range of meaning

Work, occupation, a task or job, especially work done as someone's agent: craftsmanship on the tabernacle (Exod 31:3–5; 36:1–8), the king's business (Esth 3:9; 9:3), farm work, and the 'work' forbidden on the Sabbath (Exod 20:9–10). It comes from a root meaning 'send', the same root as malʾak, 'messenger/angel'. The idea is a commission carried out for another.

Against the English

'The work of the LORD' sounds like church ministry today: preaching, missions, volunteering. Hebrew 'Yahweh's work' simply means whatever task Yahweh has assigned, and that depends entirely on context. Here the next line defines it as the sword and blood.

How it drifted

In Christian use, 'the Lord's work' became a stock phrase for ministry and religious service. The phrase was then read back into this verse, where it once meant a military commission.

Used elsewhere in the period

Elsewhere the phrase 'the work (məlāʾkāh) of Yahweh' is used for building and temple service (e.g. 1 Chr 26:30). Jeremiah's own parallel is 50:25: 'the Lord GOD of hosts has a work (məlāʾkāh) in the land of the Chaldeans'. There Yahweh opens his armoury and brings out 'the weapons of his wrath'. In Jeremiah, 'Yahweh's work' can explicitly mean a military campaign of judgment.

From the study of Proverbs 18:9

Range of meaning

Work, task, occupation, business. It covers skilled craftsmanship (the tabernacle's construction, Exod 31:3–5; 35–36), royal service and administration (1 Chr 26:29; Esth 3:9), the ordinary work forbidden on the Sabbath (Exod 20:9–10), and even the goods or property that work produces (Exod 22:8; 1 Sam 15:9). It is related to a root meaning "send", so it probably first meant an assigned errand or commission.

Against the English

Every English version gives "work". That is accurate, though in modern English "work" can sound like a wage job only. The Hebrew covers the whole productive life of a household or estate.

Used elsewhere in the period

Gen 2:2–3 uses it for God's own "work" of creation. Prov 24:27 tells a man to ready his "work" outside and in the field. The overlap with "property" in Exod 22 shows how closely a family's work and its holdings were tied.
