What it means

§ Mizpah = "watchtower"

a place in Gilead south of Jabbok

Abridged from Brown, Driver and Briggs, A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament (1906), via STEPBible.org (CC BY 4.0).

In depth

From the study of Hosea 5:1

Range of meaning

Literally 'lookout, watch-post' (from tsafah, 'to watch'). It names several sites: Mizpah in Gilead (Gen 31:49; Judg 10:17; 11:11), Mizpah in Benjamin (Judg 20:1; 1 Sam 7:5–16; 10:17), and others.

Against the English

English versions transliterate it as a place name, which hides the meaning of the name. The Septuagint (skopia, 'look-out') and Vulgate (speculatio, 'watching') translated it as a word.

Used elsewhere in the period

At Gilead's Mizpah, Jacob and Laban made a covenant with God as witness (Gen 31:49), and Jephthah was installed as leader (Judg 11:11). At Benjamin's Mizpah, Samuel gathered Israel, 'judged' them (1 Sam 7:6, 16) and presented Saul as king (1 Sam 10:17–24). Benjamin's Mizpah was fortified by Asa of Judah (1 Kgs 15:22), so by Hosea's day it was probably in Judahite hands.

From the study of Jeremiah 40:8

Range of meaning

From the verb ṣāpâ, 'to keep watch, look out'. It means 'watchtower, lookout point', and several high places in Israel and Transjordan carried the name. This one is Mizpah of Benjamin, on the road north of Jerusalem.

Against the English

English versions simply transliterate it as 'Mizpah', so the reader misses that the name means 'the Lookout'. The Hebrew here also adds the article and a 'toward' ending: 'to the Lookout'.

Used elsewhere in the period

Mizpah is a traditional place where the tribes gathered: Judges 20:1, 1 Samuel 7:5–16, and 1 Samuel 10:17, where Saul is chosen king. Most archaeologists identify it with Tell en-Nasbeh, about 12 km north of Jerusalem. The site shows no destruction layer from 586 BC and continued as an administrative center into the Babylonian period. One excavated find there is the seal of 'Jaazaniah, servant of the king' (see debates).

From the study of Judges 20:1

Range of meaning

"Watchtower, lookout point", from the root tsaphah, "to keep watch". Several places carried the name (a Mizpah in Gilead, Judg 10:17; 11:11, 34; one in Judah; one in Moab). The one here is in Benjamin.

Against the English

Translations simply transliterate it as "Mizpah" or "Mizpeh" (KJV). BSB's "before the LORD at Mizpah" smooths the Hebrew, which literally says "to YHWH, (to) Mizpah".

Used elsewhere in the period

The Benjaminite Mizpah is also where Samuel gathers Israel for repentance and war (1 Sam 7:5–16) and where Saul is chosen by lot (1 Sam 10:17). After 586 BC it is Gedaliah's administrative centre (Jer 40–41). Most scholars place it at Tell en-Nasbeh, about 12 km north of Jerusalem. Some prefer Nebi Samwil.
