In depth
From the study of 1 Chronicles 2:16
- Range of meaning
A man's name starting with 'av, 'father'. The second part is debated: yesh 'there is' ('the father exists'), shai 'gift' ('father of a gift'), or a shortened form of Jesse's name (Yishai), 'my father is Jesse'. None of these is certain.
- Against the English
Every English version normalises the spelling to 'Abishai'. YLT and some literal versions keep 'Abshai'.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Chronicles consistently uses the shorter spelling אַבְשַׁי (1 Chronicles 2:16; 11:20; 18:12; 19:11, 15). Samuel uses אֲבִישַׁי (1 Samuel 26:6–9; 2 Samuel 16:9; 23:18).
