Range of meaning

A personal name, probably 'the Father is abundant/excellent' (av, 'father', used of God, plus a form of the root y-t-r, 'be left over, abound').

Against the English

Only a name in English. The point lies in who Abiathar was, not in the name's meaning.

Used elsewhere in the period

Abiathar was the son of Ahimelech of Nob, from Eli's house. He escaped Saul's massacre and joined David (1 Sam 22:20–23). He carried the ephod for David (1 Sam 23:6–9), served beside Zadok, and was later banished to Anathoth by Solomon for backing Adonijah. That banishment fulfilled the word against Eli's house (1 Kgs 2:26–27; 1 Sam 2:27–36).

1 Kings · 9
  1. 1 Kings 1:7 אֶבְיָתָ֣ר Abiathar

So Adonijah conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, who supported him.

Here: The name probably means "the Father is abundant." Abiathar was the only priest to survive Saul's massacre of the priests at Nob (1 Samuel 22:20). He had served David since David was a fugitive, and he came from the priestly house of Eli.

  2. 1 Kings 1:19 וּלְאֶבְיָתָר֙ and <to> Abiathar

And he has sacrificed an abundance of oxen, fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the other sons of the king, as well as Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army. But he has not invited your servant Solomon.

Here: The name probably means 'the Father (God) is abundant' or 'father of abundance'. Putting Abiathar first in the sentence marks a new case: after Adonijah's execution (v. 25), the king turns to the next of Adonijah's backers.

  7. 1 Kings 2:27 אֶבְיָתָ֔ר Abiathar

So Solomon banished Abiathar from the priesthood of the LORD and thus fulfilled the word that the LORD had spoken at Shiloh against the house of Eli.

Here: Abiathar, the other chief priest. He was the only survivor of Saul's massacre of the priests of Nob (1 Sam 22:20) and had been with David since his outlaw years. His name probably means 'the Father (God) is abundant/excellent'.
