In depth

From the study of Exodus 6:22

Range of meaning

The name comes from sēter, 'hiding place, covering, shelter, secret place', with the ending -î, 'my'. It means 'my shelter' or 'my hiding place'. It is most likely a shortened form of a longer name that included God, such as 'Yah is my shelter'.

Against the English

KJV writes 'Zithri'. Modern versions (BSB, WEB, YLT, NIV, ESV) write 'Sithri', which better matches the Hebrew samekh (an s sound).

Used elsewhere in the period

He appears only here in the Bible. The noun sēter is used for God as a refuge: 'You are my hiding place' (Psalm 32:7; 119:114), and 'He who dwells in the shelter (sēter) of the Most High' (Psalm 91:1).

Where it appears

Exodus · 1
  1. Exodus 6:22 וְסִתְרִֽי׃ and Sithri

The sons of Uzziel were Mishael, Elzaphan, and Sithri.

Here: Uzziel's third son, mentioned nowhere else in the Bible. The name means 'my hiding place' or 'my shelter', probably a shortened form of a longer name such as 'God/Yah is my shelter'. It echoes the 'hiding' idea in his brother's name, Elzaphan.
