In depth

From the study of Isaiah 44:22

Range of meaning

ʿāb is a thick, dark, often rain-bearing cloud (1 Kings 18:44–45; Isaiah 5:6), and it can also mean the darkness of a dense mass. ʿānān is the general word for cloud. It is famous as the cloud of God's presence in the wilderness, but it is also used for clouds that pass and vanish (Job 7:9; Hosea 6:4; 13:3).

Against the English

KJV and WEB: "as a thick cloud ... as a cloud" (accurate). BSB and ESV: "like a cloud ... like (a) mist." NIV: "like a cloud ... like the morning mist," which adds "morning" to make the vanishing explicit. YLT adds "[by]" ("as [by] a thick cloud"), which turns the cloud into the tool God uses to cover the sins. The Hebrew does not say that.

How it drifted

No drift in the words themselves. The misreading comes from the grammar of the simile and from the modern sense of "blot out" as "obscure."

Used elsewhere in the period

Clouds as something that disappears without trace: Job 7:9 ("As the cloud fades and vanishes, so he who goes down to Sheol does not come up"); Job 30:15 ("my prosperity has passed away like a cloud"); Hosea 6:4 and 13:3 ("like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes early away"). Clouds as a barrier between people and God: Lamentations 3:44 ("You have wrapped yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can pass through"), and compare Isaiah 59:2.

From the study of Psalm 147:8

Range of meaning

A thick, dark cloud, especially a heavy rain cloud. Sometimes it means a dense mass or thicket. It differs from עָנָן (ʿanan), the more general word for cloud, which is also used for the cloud of God's presence.

Against the English

"Clouds" is fine. English simply does not say that these are specifically the heavy, rain-bearing kind.

Used elsewhere in the period

1 Kings 18:44–45: the little cloud "like a man's hand," then the sky "black with clouds (ʿavim) and wind, and there was a heavy rain," which ends the drought after the contest with the prophets of Baal. Eccl 11:3: "if the clouds are full, they pour out rain." Ps 104:3: God "makes the clouds (ʿavim) his chariot." In Canaanite texts from Ugarit (the Baal Cycle), Baal is called "Rider of the Clouds," though with a different cloud-word.

From the study of Ecclesiastes 11:4

Range of meaning

Cloud, especially thick, dark rain-cloud; also cloud-mass or darkness. It is related to a root meaning 'thick, dense.' It is a different word from 'anan, the general word for 'cloud,' and from the 'anan used for the pillar of cloud.

Against the English

Most versions have plain 'clouds.' YLT's 'thick clouds' brings out the sense of heavy, rain-bearing cloud.

Used elsewhere in the period

1 Kings 18:44: 'a little cloud ('av) like a man's hand' that brings the storm. Isaiah 5:6: 'I will command the clouds ('avim) not to rain.' Ecclesiastes 11:3: 'if the clouds ('avim) are full, they will pour out rain.' Ecclesiastes 12:2: 'the clouds return after the rain.'
