Range of meaning

A theophoric name, meaning a name built on God's name: 'servant/worshipper of Yahweh' ('oved + -yahu). The verb 'avad covers both service to a master and worship of a god.

Against the English

English 'Obadiah' hides the meaning that the first audience heard at once.

Used elsewhere in the period

The name is common in the Hebrew Bible (about a dozen different people, including the prophet of the book of Obadiah). Names ending in -yahu are typical of Iron Age Israelite and Judahite seals and inscriptions.
