In depth
From the study of Proverbs 6:21
- Range of meaning
To bind on or wear something as an ornament or badge. It is used only twice: here and in Job 31:36 ("I would bind it on me as a crown").
- Against the English
"Tie" (BSB, KJV, ESV) and "fasten" (NIV) give the action but lose the sense that this is something worn on display, like jewelry or a badge of honor.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Job 31:36, where Job would wear the charge sheet against him openly, like a crown, because he is sure of his innocence. Jewish Aramaic and later Hebrew use related words for adorning or encircling.
Where it appears
Job · 1
-
Job 31:36 אֶֽעֶנְדֶ֖נּוּ I will tie on it
Surely I would carry it on my shoulder and wear it like a crown.
Proverbs · 1
-
Proverbs 6:21 עָ֝נְדֵ֗ם tie them
Bind them always upon your heart; tie them around your neck.
Here: "Bind them on" in the sense of putting on something you wear. The verb is rare. Its only other use is Job 31:36, where Job would "bind" an accusation on himself "as a crown." It suggests wearing something on display, as adornment.
