Hebrew word · H6069

עַנְּתֹתִי

ha'anetoti

Anathoth

A label of origin: 'Anathothite, man of Anathoth'. The town name ʿAnātôt is plural in form and is often linked to the Canaanite goddess Anat, which would make it an old pre-Israelite place name. That link is plausible but not certain.

Appears 5 times in 5 verses of the Hebrew Old Testament. ·

In depth

From the study of 1 Chronicles 11:28

Range of meaning

A label of origin: 'Anathothite, man of Anathoth'. The town name ʿAnātôt is plural in form and is often linked to the Canaanite goddess Anat, which would make it an old pre-Israelite place name. That link is plausible but not certain.

Against the English

KJV 'Antothite' and YLT 'Annethothite' are not translating differently. They are just reproducing the Masoretic spelling (the vowels and marks the medieval Hebrew scribes added) in different ways, including the doubled n that the Masoretes marked. BSB and WEB use the standard modern 'Anathothite'.

Used elsewhere in the period

Anathoth was a Levitical city of Benjamin (Josh 21:18; 1 Chr 6:60). Solomon exiled the priest Abiathar there (1 Kgs 2:26). It was Jeremiah's hometown (Jer 1:1; 32:7–9). Jehu the Anathothite is another of David's men (1 Chr 12:3). The site is usually placed at or near Ras el-Kharrubeh / ʿAnata, north-east of Jerusalem.

From the study of 1 Chronicles 27:12

Range of meaning

Gentilic (a word naming someone by their place of origin): "from Anathoth." Anathoth was a town in Benjamin, probably modern Ras el-Kharrubeh or a site near ʿAnata, about 5 km north-east of Jerusalem. The name is probably connected with the Canaanite goddess Anat.

Against the English

Spellings differ (Anathothite, Anetothite in the KJV, Antothite in the YLT), but the meaning is the same.

Used elsewhere in the period

It was a priestly town (Joshua 21:18; 1 Chronicles 6:60). Abiathar the priest was banished there (1 Kings 2:26). It was Jeremiah's home (Jeremiah 1:1; 32:7–9). Abiezer the Anathothite is listed among David's warriors (2 Samuel 23:27; 1 Chronicles 11:28).
