In depth
From the study of Isaiah 54:14
- Range of meaning
Oppression, extortion, exploitation: the stronger using force or fraud to take from the weaker. The verb ʿāshaq is used of defrauding a neighbour or withholding a hired worker's wages (Lev 6:2–4 [MT 5:21–23]; Lev 19:13; Deut 24:14), and of foreign powers crushing Israel (Deut 28:29, 33; Isa 52:4, of Assyria).
- Against the English
English 'oppression' fits, but in some modern church usage 'oppression' has come to mean mainly spiritual or demonic harassment of an individual. The Hebrew word is concrete and social: economic exploitation and political domination. NIV's 'tyranny' brings out the political side.
- How it drifted
Modern deliverance-ministry vocabulary ('demonic oppression') has given the English word a spiritual meaning the Hebrew term does not have.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Isa 59:13 ('speaking oppression and revolt'); Jer 6:6 (Jerusalem 'full of oppression'); Eccl 5:8; 7:7; Ps 62:10 ('do not trust in oppression/extortion'); Ps 73:8.
From the study of Jeremiah 22:17
- Range of meaning
Oppression by exploitation: extortion, defrauding, withholding what is owed, especially from the weak (workers, widows, orphans, foreigners). The verb ʿashaq is used in Lev 19:13 for keeping back a hired laborer's wages.
- Against the English
'Oppression' (KJV, WEB, ESV, YLT) is right but general. 'Extortion' (BSB) brings out the economic side. Neither quite conveys the specific sense of cheating someone out of what is theirs.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Lev 19:13; Deut 24:14 ('do not oppress a hired worker'); Jer 6:6 ('there is nothing but ʿosheq within her'); Eccl 5:8; Ezek 22:29.
- Range of meaning
ʿOsheq: oppression, extortion, wealth taken by pressing on the weak (unpaid wages, unfair exactions, abuse of legal or social power). Gazel: robbery, seizure by force, and also the stolen goods themselves.
- Against the English
'Oppression' (KJV) sounds political and abstract in modern English. 'Extortion' (BSB) is closer to the economic sense. Neither word alone carries the legal and covenant weight of the Hebrew pair.
- Used elsewhere in the period
The same two roots are paired in the Torah: Lev 19:13, 'You shall not oppress (taʿashoq) your neighbor or rob (tigzol) him; the wages of a hired worker must not stay with you overnight.' Also Lev 6:2–4 (Heb 5:21–23), Mic 2:2 ('they covet fields and seize them... they oppress a man and his house'), Ezek 18:18; 22:29, Eccl 5:8.

-
Psalm 73:8 עֹ֑שֶׁק oppression
They mock and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.
Here: Exploiting the weak: extortion, cheating, defrauding, squeezing people for gain. A Masoretic mark (the athnach, the main pause in the verse) places it at the end of the first half, so the talk 'in evil' is talk about oppression. It is the content of their speech, perhaps boasted of or planned openly.

Ecclesiastes 7:7 הָעֹ֖שֶׁק <the> oppression
Surely extortion turns a wise man into a fool, and a bribe corrupts the heart.
Here: The hard squeezing of the weak by the strong, especially for money. With the article ('the extortion') it names a familiar evil. It can mean the act of oppressing, or the profit squeezed out of others, which is why it pairs so naturally with 'bribe'.

-
Isaiah 59:13 עֹ֣שֶׁק oppression
rebelling and denying the LORD, turning away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering lies from the heart.
