In depth

From the study of Jeremiah 50:8

Range of meaning

A full-grown male goat, used in sacrifice (Num 7; Ps 50:9, 13) and in breeding (Gen 31:10, 12). It is also a metaphor for leading men, chieftains: "all the leaders (ʿattudei) of the earth" (Isa 14:9); "I will punish the he-goats", meaning Judah's leaders (Zech 10:3).

Against the English

BSB and NIV add "that lead", which makes the point plain. KJV, WEB and YLT keep "he goats before the flocks" and leave the reader to work out the picture. LXX "serpents" (drakontes) loses the image altogether.

How it drifted

Readers who know Matthew 25:31–46, where the goats are sent away and the sheep welcomed, may think goats here are a bad sign. In Israel's pastoral world the he-goat was a picture of vigour and leadership. Matthew's contrast belongs to a different image and setting.

Used elsewhere in the period

Prov 30:31 lists the he-goat (tayish, a related word) among creatures that "move with stately bearing", alongside the lion and the king. In Near Eastern herding, goats, being bolder and more active than sheep, often go ahead of a mixed flock, and a lead male goat can head it out of the fold. The image would have been obvious to anyone who had watched a flock leave its pen.

From the study of Zechariah 10:3

Range of meaning

Male goats or rams of the flock, the strong animals that walk at the front. Figuratively, chiefs, leading men and the powerful.

Against the English

KJV and YLT stay literal ('the goats,' 'he-goats'), and WEB has 'male goats.' BSB and several modern versions turn the image into its meaning, 'the leaders.' The literal versions keep the pasture picture but can hide the meaning. The interpretive versions give the meaning but lose the picture.

Used elsewhere in the period

In Isaiah 14:9 the dead kings of the earth are literally 'all the he-goats of the earth.' In Jeremiah 50:8 the exiles are told to 'be like he-goats before the flock,' meaning go first. Ezekiel 34:17 has God judging 'between rams and he-goats,' that is, between the strong animals that push the weak ones around. The Greek translation (LXX) here oddly has 'lambs' (amnous). The Latin Vulgate has hircos, 'he-goats.'
