In depth
From the study of Deuteronomy 32:35
- Range of meaning
Ready, prepared. As a plural noun it means "things made ready": what is in store, what has been prepared. A related form means "treasures" or "stores" (Isa 10:13).
- Against the English
BSB and WEB "doom" captures the threat but loses the idea of preparation and storage. KJV "the things that shall come upon them" and YLT "things prepared for them" are closer.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Esth 3:14 and 8:13 use the singular for being "ready for that day". Job 15:28 uses the related verb ‘tḏ, "ready to become heaps".
