Range of meaning

It occurs only here, so its meaning is uncertain. The main proposals are: (1) 'abundance, wealth', compared with Aramaic and Syriac ʿ-t-r 'be rich', and with Ezekiel 35:13, where a related verb may mean 'multiply'; (2) 'entreaty, prayer', from Hebrew ʿātar 'to pray', which is the Vulgate's reading; (3) a scribal change from ʾōṣĕrôt 'treasures', which is a modern suggested correction with no manuscript behind it.

Against the English

KJV, BSB, WEB, YLT and NASB have 'abundance of'. NIV and ESV also go with 'abundant/abundance'. No major modern English version follows the Vulgate's 'entreaty'.

Used elsewhere in the period

BDB and HALOT both give 'abundance' (HALOT marks it uncertain). The Vulgate has deprecationem, 'supplication'. The Septuagint (Jer 40:6) does not clearly render the word.
