Range of meaning

A personal name from the root p-l-ṭ, 'escape, be delivered'. It is a short form of Palti'el, 'God is my deliverance' (or 'my escape').

Against the English

KJV and YLT spell it 'Phalti', following older conventions. BSB, WEB, ESV and NASB have 'Palti'. Some versions (the NIV, as far as can be determined) use 'Paltiel', taken from 2 Sam 3:15, so that readers recognise the same man.

Used elsewhere in the period

In 2 Sam 3:15–16 Ishbosheth takes Michal 'from her husband, from Paltiel son of Laish', and 'her husband went with her, weeping as he walked behind her, as far as Bahurim', until Abner sends him home. Later rabbinic tradition (Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin 19b) made him a model of restraint, claiming he never consummated the marriage because he knew she was still David's wife. That is a later interpretation, not something the biblical text states.
