Range of meaning

Bands, sashes, or ties: things tied on as finery. The root qashar means 'to tie, bind.' The word appears only here and in Isa 3:20, where it is listed among the luxury items of Jerusalem's women.

Against the English

KJV/WEB 'attire' sounds like clothing in general. YLT 'bands' keeps the literal root. BSB 'wedding sash' names a specific bridal garment but supplies 'wedding' from context.

How it drifted

'Attire' (KJV, 1611) was a fair general choice then. Today it sounds like an everyday outfit, which loses the sense of a special bridal item tied on with care.

Used elsewhere in the period

Isa 3:20 lists qishshurim with headdresses and armlets. Isa 49:18 uses the verb: Zion will 'bind them on (qashar) as a bride does.' The Septuagint renders it stēthodesmis, 'breast-band', and the Vulgate fascia pectoralis, 'breast sash'. So ancient translators understood it as a band worn across the chest.

Where it appears

Isaiah · 1
  1. Isaiah 3:20 וְהַקִּשֻּׁרִ֔ים and the sashes

    their headdresses, ankle chains, and sashes; their perfume bottles and charms;

Jeremiah · 1
  1. Jeremiah 2:32 קִשֻּׁרֶ֑יהָ sashes her

    Does a maiden forget her jewelry or a bride her wedding sash? Yet My people have forgotten Me for days without number.

    Here: From the root q-sh-r, 'to tie, bind': ornamental bands or sashes tied on as part of a bride's finery, perhaps a girdle or breast-band. The plural suggests a set of bridal bands. Exactly what garment it was is uncertain.
