Range of meaning

A personal name, probably linked to the root rakhav, 'to ride.' Close relatives are rekhev, 'chariot' or 'chariotry,' and rakkav, 'driver' or 'rider.'

Against the English

'Rechab' (KJV, BSB, WEB), 'Rekab' (NIV) and 'Recab' (NLT) are only spelling choices. English spelling hides the sound-link to chariots that a Hebrew hearer might have noticed.

Used elsewhere in the period

Jonadab son of Rechab rides in Jehu's chariot in 2 Kings 10:15-16, a detail some find suggestive. 1 Chronicles 2:55 connects 'the house of Rechab' with Kenites. Nehemiah 3:14 names a Malchijah son of Rechab. Another, unrelated Rechab appears in 2 Samuel 4.
