In depth

From the study of Psalm 23:4

Range of meaning

A stick or rod: a shepherd's club or cudgel, a rod used for striking or disciplining, a ruler's scepter, and by extension a 'tribe' (the group under one scepter).

Against the English

'Rod' in English immediately recalls 'spare the rod', a tool for punishing. Here it is the shepherd's defensive weapon, used against threats to the sheep, not against the sheep.

How it drifted

Proverbs' 'rod of discipline' sayings (Prov 13:24; 22:15) and the English idiom have made 'rod' mean punishment. Sermons then sometimes read discipline into this verse.

Used elsewhere in the period

David the shepherd describes fighting lions and bears to rescue sheep (1 Sam 17:34–35), and he goes to Goliath with his 'stick' (maqqēl, a different word, 17:40, 43). Flocks were counted as they 'passed under the šēbeṭ' (Lev 27:32; Ezek 20:37). In Mic 7:14 God is asked to 'shepherd your people with your šēbeṭ'. The scepter sense appears in Gen 49:10 and Ps 45:6. Egyptian and Mesopotamian art shows shepherds and kings carrying a short club or mace.

From the study of Proverbs 22:8

Range of meaning

Rod, staff, club. It was used for discipline (Prov 13:24; 23:13–14), for beating fools (Prov 10:13; 26:3) and slaves (Exod 21:20), as a shepherd's staff (Ps 23:4), and as a ruler's scepter (Gen 49:10). By extension it also means a tribe, the group under one 'staff'.

Against the English

English 'rod' is accurate but can sound mild or purely parental. In Proverbs the rod is also a tool of power and domination.

Used elsewhere in the period

Isa 14:5–6: 'The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter (shevet) of rulers, that struck peoples in fury (be'evrah).' This uses both of this verse's key nouns for a tyrant's power. Isa 10:5 calls Assyria 'the rod of my anger' (shevet 'appi). Ps 125:3: 'the scepter of wickedness will not rest on the land of the righteous.'

From the study of Proverbs 22:15

Range of meaning

A rod, staff or club. It can be a shepherd's rod (Lev 27:32; Ps 23:4), a ruler's sceptre (Gen 49:10; Ps 45:6), a weapon (2 Sam 23:21) or an instrument for beating (Exod 21:20; Isa 10:24). By extension it also means 'tribe,' the group ruled under one staff.

Against the English

'Rod' is accurate. Some modern explanations take it as only a shepherd's guiding staff, or as purely a figure of speech, but Proverbs does not support that softening.

Used elsewhere in the period

In Proverbs: 'a rod for the back of him who lacks sense' (10:13); 'whoever spares his rod hates his son' (13:24); 'a rod for the back of fools' (26:3); 'if you strike him with the rod he will not die; you strike him with the rod and rescue his soul from Sheol' (23:13–14). Outside Israel, the Aramaic Words of Ahiqar say something very close: 'Spare not your son from the rod… if I strike you, my son, you will not die.' Egyptian school texts likewise say a boy's 'ear is on his back.'
