Range of meaning

The adjective for a descendant of Shuham, Dan's son.

Against the English

BSB 'Shuhamite clans' and KJV/WEB 'Shuhamites' turn a Hebrew singular with the article ('the Shuhamite') into a plural. This is natural English. The Hebrew treats the descendants as one corporate person named for its ancestor.

Used elsewhere in the period

Gen 46:23 calls Dan's son Hushim (חֻשִׁים), and the consonants ḥ-sh-m/sh-ḥ-m look transposed compared with Shuham (שׁוּחָם). Most commentators take them as the same person. 1 Chr 7:12 mentions a 'Hushim, son of Aher,' which some link to Dan, but that text is uncertain.
