Against the English

English versions all keep 'Ashdod.' Some paraphrases add 'the Philistine city' to help the reader.

Used elsewhere in the period

Ashdod is one of the five Philistine lords' cities (Josh 13:3), where the ark was placed in Dagon's temple (1 Sam 5). The prophets condemn it (Amos 1:8; Zeph 2:4). Sargon's inscriptions tell of its revolts under Azuri and then Yamani, and say Sargon made it an Assyrian province. Excavations at Tel Ashdod found pieces of a basalt stele of Sargon.
