In depth
From the study of 2 Kings 12:21
- Range of meaning
A personal name, grammatically feminine, probably from shāmaʿ 'to hear'.
- Against the English
English readers will likely assume 'son of Shimeath' names a father, as 'son of' usually does in the Bible.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Only here and 2 Chronicles 24:26, where she is called 'the Ammonitess'. The Chronicler likewise turns Shomer into Shimrith 'the Moabitess'.

Here: A woman's name (probably from the root 'to hear'). So Jozacar is identified by his mother, which is unusual; 2 Chronicles 24:26 adds that she was an Ammonite.
