In depth
From the study of Ezekiel 17:22
- Range of meaning
Lofty, towering, prominent. It occurs only here in the Bible and is probably from the root tll, as in tel, a raised mound.
- Against the English
KJV 'eminent', BSB/WEB 'lofty', YLT 'lofty'. All convey height. KJV's 'eminent' keeps the old sense of 'standing out above'.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Hapax legomenon (a word that occurs only once in the Bible). The Septuagint appears to have connected it with talah, 'to hang', and rendered it with a verb meaning 'I will hang it' (see textual notes), which shows ancient uncertainty about the word.
