In depth

From the study of Revelation 15:8

Range of meaning

Smoke from fire, incense or burning. In biblical use it often accompanies God's appearing (theophany).

Against the English

English 'smoke' is accurate. What a modern reader lacks is the biblical association.

Used elsewhere in the period

Sinai 'was wrapped in smoke because the LORD descended on it in fire' (Exod 19:18). In Isaiah's vision 'the house was filled with smoke' (Isa 6:4; the Greek Old Testament has the same noun kapnos). The cloud and glory filled the tabernacle (Exod 40:34–35) and Solomon's temple (1 Kgs 8:10–11). Elsewhere in Revelation, smoke of incense rises with the saints' prayers (8:4), and smoke rises from the pit (9:2) and from fallen Babylon (18:9; 19:3).

From the study of Revelation 18:18

Range of meaning

Smoke, whether from a fire, from incense, or from a city burning.

Against the English

No real difference among translations. BSB adds 'rising,' which is fair.

Used elsewhere in the period

Gen 19:28 (Abraham sees the smoke of Sodom 'like the smoke of a furnace'); Isa 34:10 (Edom's smoke 'goes up forever'); Rev 9:2; 14:11; 19:3. Smoke appears in Revelation as both judgment and worship: incense smoke rises with the saints' prayers in 8:4.

From the study of Revelation 18:9

Range of meaning

Smoke: from fire, from incense, or from a destroyed city.

Against the English

English 'smoke' is accurate. The point to notice is what the image echoes.

Used elsewhere in the period

Gen 19:28: Abraham sees 'the smoke of the land going up like the smoke of a furnace' over Sodom. Isa 34:10: Edom's 'smoke shall go up forever'. Elsewhere in Revelation: smoke of the abyss (9:2), the worshippers' torment (14:11), Babylon's smoke going up forever (19:3). There is a contrast with the smoke of incense rising with the saints' prayers (8:4) and the smoke of God's glory in the temple (15:8).

Where it appears

Acts · 1
  1. Acts 2:19 καπνοῦ. of smoke.

I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.

Here: 'Of smoke'. It names what the column is made of. The image is the smoke of Sinai 'like a furnace' (Exod 19:18), or of a burning city.

Revelation · 12
  1. Revelation 8:4 καπνὸς smoke

And the smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the saints, rose up before God from the hand of the angel.

Here: The visible column of fragrant smoke from the burning incense. In Revelation smoke also rises from the abyss (9:2), from the torment of beast-worshippers (14:11) and from fallen Babylon (19:3). This first rising smoke belongs to the worship and prayer of God's people.

  2. Revelation 9:2 καπνὸς καπνὸς καπνοῦ smoke, [the] smoke

The star opened the pit of the Abyss, and smoke rose out of it like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke from the pit.

Here: Thick smoke billowing up. In the Old Testament this often accompanies God's judgment (Sodom) or his fearful presence (Sinai).

  3. Revelation 9:3 καπνοῦ smoke

And out of the smoke, locusts descended on the earth, and they were given power like that of the scorpions of the earth.

  4. Revelation 9:17 καπνὸς smoke

Now the horses and riders in my vision looked like this: The riders had breastplates the colors of fire, sapphire, and sulfur. The heads of the horses were like the heads of lions, and out of their mouths proceeded fire, smoke, and sulfur.

Here: The second plague, matching the dark blue-violet armour. Smoke also rose from the abyss in 9:2–3.

  5. Revelation 9:18 καπνοῦ smoke

A third of mankind was killed by the three plagues of fire, smoke, and sulfur that proceeded from their mouths.

Here: Choking smoke, the second blow. It recalls the smoke rising from Sodom "like the smoke of a furnace" (Gen 19:28) and the smoke of the abyss in this same chapter (9:2–3).

  6. Revelation 14:11 καπνὸς smoke

And the smoke of their torment rises forever and ever. Day and night there is no rest for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”

Here: Smoke going up from a burning. To Bible readers it recalled Sodom (Gen 19:28) and Edom (Isa 34:10): a sign of God's judgment that anyone could see from far off.

  7. Revelation 15:8 καπνοῦ with smoke

And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from His power; and no one could enter the temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.

Here: 'With smoke.' The genitive case gives what the sanctuary is filled with. This is the smoke of God showing himself, as at Sinai and in Isaiah's vision, not a fire burning something up.

  8. Revelation 18:9 καπνὸν smoke

Then the kings of the earth who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her will weep and wail at the sight of the smoke rising from the fire that consumes her.

Here: The column of smoke from a burning city, the classic sight of total destruction. It echoes Sodom (Gen 19:28) and Edom (Isa 34:10). Compare Rev 19:3: 'her smoke goes up forever'.

  9. Revelation 18:18 καπνὸν smoke

and cry out at the sight of the smoke rising from the fire that consumes her. “What city was ever like this great city?” they will exclaim.

Here: The column of smoke seen from the sea. In the Bible this is the sign of a city wiped out by divine judgment, most famously Sodom (Gen 19:28) and Edom (Isa 34:10). Revelation 19:3 picks the image up again: 'her smoke goes up forever and ever.'

  10. Revelation 19:3 καπνὸς smoke

And a second time they called out: “Hallelujah! Her smoke rises forever and ever.”

Here: The smoke of a city destroyed by fire. In 18:9 and 18:18 kings and sailors "see the smoke of her burning" from far away. It echoes the smoke over Sodom (Genesis 19:28) and over Edom (Isaiah 34:10).
