In depth

From the study of Matthew 26:23

Range of meaning

A bowl or deep dish, particularly a serving bowl for liquids, broths or sauces into which diners dipped bread. It can also be a vessel in a sanctuary.

Against the English

'Dish' (KJV, WEB, ESV) and 'bowl' (BSB, NIV, NASB) are both accurate. 'Bowl' better suggests a deep vessel for dipping. 'Dish' can make a modern reader picture a flat plate.

Used elsewhere in the period

In the LXX it is used for the silver bowls offered by the tribal leaders for the tabernacle (Num 7:13 and the following verses) and for vessels in Exodus 25:29. Sirach 31:14 uses it for the shared dish at a banquet. In the New Testament it appears only here and in Mark 14:20.
