In depth
- Range of meaning
The Greek spelling of Hebrew Perez, 'breach, breakthrough, bursting out' (from the verb 'to break through, burst out'; HALOT).
- Against the English
KJV 'Phares' follows the Greek and hides the link to the 'Perez' of Genesis and Ruth. Modern versions use the Hebrew form.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Gen 38:29: as Perez pushed out ahead of his brother, the midwife said, 'What a breach you have made for yourself!' His clan heads the tribe of Judah (Num 26:20–21). Ruth 4:12 and 18 make him the ancestor of David. Neh 11:4–6 lists 'the sons of Perez' living in Jerusalem after the exile, so the clan name was still known.
