In depth
- Range of meaning
To be completely astonished or utterly amazed. It is a strengthened form of θαυμάζω (thaumazō, “marvel, wonder”). Traditional Strong's numbering files it under G2296; the supplied data gives it the extended number G6028.
- Against the English
BSB and KJV say “marveled,” which is accurate but mild. WEB's “marveled greatly” captures the strengthening prefix. Most English versions also lose the tense, which shows a state that went on: they stood there amazed.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Rare. It appears nowhere else in the New Testament. In Jewish wisdom literature it is used of deep astonishment, for example Sirach 27:23 and 43:18 (the heart is amazed at the whiteness of snow).
Where it appears
Mark · 1
-
Mark 12:17 ἐξεθαύμαζον they were amazed
Then Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” And they marveled at Him.
Here: A strengthened form of “marvel” (ek- means “out,” so “utterly”), in a tense that describes an ongoing state: they stood there astonished. It appears nowhere else in the New Testament.
