In depth
- Range of meaning
Made of silver.
- Against the English
English 'silver' is accurate. The point lies in the contrast with gold, which English readers can easily miss.
- Used elsewhere in the period
2 Kings 24:13 records that in 597 BC Nebuchadnezzar 'cut in pieces all the vessels of gold that Solomon had made'. In 586 BC the remaining gold, silver and bronze were taken (2 Kings 25:13–15; Jeremiah 52:17–19). Ezra 1:9–11 lists gold and silver items returned under Cyrus.
