In depth

From the study of Song of Songs 8:6

Range of meaning

A seal: an engraved stone or metal stamp, or a small cylinder, pressed into clay or wax to mark ownership, sign documents, and close containers or letters. By extension the seal stood for the person: his name, legal identity and authority.

Against the English

English 'seal' today makes people think of an official stamp on a certificate, or of 'sealing' something shut. Neither brings to mind the personal object a man wore on his own body day and night, his signature in physical form.

How it drifted

Seals stopped being everyday personal objects, so the bodily, intimate picture is lost.

Used elsewhere in the period

Judah gives Tamar his 'seal and cord' as a pledge of identity (Gen 38:18, 25). The LORD says that even if King Jehoiachin were 'the signet ring on my right hand' he would tear him off (Jer 22:24). That image is reversed for Zerubbabel, whom God will make 'like a signet ring' (Hag 2:23), meaning treasured, kept close, a sign of authority. Hundreds of seals and seal impressions (bullae) from Iron Age Judah have been found, many bearing personal names. In an Egyptian love song a lover wishes he were his beloved's seal ring, so that he would always be on her finger (Fox).

From the study of Haggai 2:23

Range of meaning

A seal: a small engraved stone or metal object pressed into clay or wax to mark ownership, sign a document or close a container. It could be a stamp seal, a cylinder seal, or a seal set in a finger ring, and it was often worn on a cord around the neck (Gen 38:18) or on the hand (Jer 22:24). A related verb, ḥātam, means "to seal". To hold someone's seal was to act with their authority. The seal was also a personal treasure, kept close to the body (Song 8:6, "set me as a seal upon your heart").

Against the English

KJV says "a signet"; most modern versions (BSB, WEB, ESV, NASB, NIV) say "signet ring". "Ring" is a fair inference from Jer 22:24 ("on my right hand"), but the Hebrew word names the seal itself, not its setting. The separate Hebrew word for a ring is ṭabba‘at (Gen 41:42; Esth 3:10).

How it drifted

Modern readers hardly use seals. A "signet ring" sounds like heirloom jewellery or a status ornament. In the ancient world it worked more like a signature, an ID card and power of attorney in one object.

Used elsewhere in the period

Joseph gets Pharaoh's ring as a mark of delegated rule (Gen 41:42). Jezebel signs letters with Ahab's seal (1 Kgs 21:8). The Persian king's ring passes from Haman to Mordecai (Esth 3:10; 8:2, 8–10). Thousands of Iron Age and Persian-period seals and seal impressions survive from Judah, including stamped jar handles reading "Yehud", the name of the Persian province. Ben Sira, writing around 180 BCE, picks up this verse directly: Zerubbabel "was like a signet on the right hand" (Sir 49:11).

From the study of Jeremiah 22:24

Range of meaning

A seal: a stamp seal (often set in a ring) or a cylinder seal, worn on the finger or hung on a cord around the neck (Gen 38:18). Pressed into clay or wax, it authenticated documents, closed jars and sealed property. By extension it stood for the owner's identity and legal authority, and for something kept close and treasured.

Against the English

"Signet" (KJV, WEB) and "signet ring" (BSB and most modern versions) are accurate. But a modern reader tends to hear "ring" as jewellery or a token of affection. The point is that it is a legal instrument: whoever holds it acts in the owner's name.

How it drifted

Seals stopped being everyday legal tools in the West. "Signet ring" survives mainly as an ornament or heirloom, so its function as a signature and a delegated authority has faded.

Used elsewhere in the period

Pharaoh gives Joseph his ring as a grant of authority (Gen 41:42). Ahasuerus hands his ring to Haman and later to Mordecai, and decrees sealed with it cannot be revoked (Esth 3:10–12; 8:2, 8). Jezebel seals letters with Ahab's seal (1 Kgs 21:8). The beloved asks to be set "as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm" (Song 8:6). Hundreds of Judahite stamp seals and clay seal-impressions (bullae) from the 8th–6th centuries BC have been excavated, many naming royal officials. The Hebrew word is commonly thought to be related to an Egyptian word for seal (HALOT).
