Range of meaning

A sentence-name: ʾāḥaz 'he has grasped, seized, held' + -yāh(û), the short form of YHWH, giving 'YHWH has taken hold (of him)'.

Against the English

English 'Ahaziah' hides the meaning. Two kings had this name: Ahab's son in Israel (1 Kgs 22:40) and this Judean king, who was Ahab's grandson.

Used elsewhere in the period

Names built on ʾḥz are attested in Hebrew seals and inscriptions of the period (compare King Ahaz, a shortened form of the same kind of name).

Where it appears

1 Kings · 3
  1. 1 Kings 22:40 אֲחַזְיָ֥הוּ Ahaziah

And Ahab rested with his fathers, and his son Ahaziah reigned in his place.

Here: "YHWH has grasped/held". Strikingly, the son of the Baal-sponsoring Ahab and Jezebel bears a name honoring Israel's God; the irony is not commented on, but 22:51–53 says he followed Baal anyway.

  2. 1 Kings 22:49 אֲחַזְיָ֤הוּ Ahaziah

At that time Ahaziah son of Ahab said to Jehoshaphat, “Let my servants sail with your servants,” but Jehoshaphat refused.

  3. 1 Kings 22:51 אֲחַזְיָ֣הוּ Ahaziah

In the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat’s reign over Judah, Ahaziah son of Ahab became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria two years.

2 Kings · 20
  1. 2 Kings 1:2 אֲחַזְיָ֜ה Ahaziah

Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers and instructed them: “Go inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will recover from this injury.”

Here: The king's name means "Yah (the LORD) has grasped/held." That is ironic, because this son of Ahab and Jezebel turns away from the God his name honours.

  2. 2 Kings 1:18 אֲחַזְיָ֖הוּ Ahaziah

As for the rest of the acts of Ahaziah, along with his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

  3. 2 Kings 8:24 אֲחַזְיָ֥הוּ Ahaziah

And Jehoram rested with his fathers and was buried with them in the City of David. And his son Ahaziah reigned in his place.

  7. 2 Kings 9:16 וַֽאֲחַזְיָה֙ and Ahaziah

“Harness!” Joram shouted, and they harnessed his chariot. Then Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah set out, each in his own chariot, and met Jehu on the property of Naboth the Jezreelite.

Here: Ahaziah of Judah, whose name means 'YHWH has grasped'. His mother Athaliah was of Ahab's house (8:26–27), which makes him Joram's nephew and ties him to the doomed dynasty.

  9. 2 Kings 9:23 אֲחַזְיָ֖הוּ אֲחַזְיָֽה׃ Ahaziah, O Ahaziah

Joram turned around and fled, calling out to Ahaziah, “Treachery, Ahaziah!”

  13. 2 Kings 11:1 אֲחַזְיָ֔הוּ Ahaziah

When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to annihilate all the royal heirs.

Here: King of Judah for one year, killed in Jehu's coup while visiting the northern king (2 Kgs 9:27). The name means roughly 'Yahweh has taken hold'.

  14. 2 Kings 11:2 אֲחַזְיָ֜הוּ אֲחַזְיָ֗ה Ahaziah

But Jehosheba daughter of King Joram, the sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the sons of the king who were being murdered. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah, and he was not killed.

So Hazael withdrew from Jerusalem.
