In depth
From the study of 1 Chronicles 9:37
- Range of meaning
A personal name built on ach ("brother") with the ending -yo. It is usually read as "his brother" or "brotherly". Some scholars read the ending as a short form of the divine name ("brother of Yah"), but this is less likely.
- Against the English
Every English version simply writes it as the name "Ahio". No translation of 1 Chronicles 9:37 renders it "his brother".
- Used elsewhere in the period
The same consonants appear in 2 Samuel 6:3–4 (Ahio son of Abinadab) and 1 Chronicles 8:14 and 8:31. In 2 Samuel 6:3 the Greek Septuagint reads the letters as "his brothers" rather than as a name. That shows the word could be read either way. In this verse the Septuagint has the name Achiō.
